Urdu is Pakistan's lingua franca, but it is the mother tongue of less than a tenth of the country. Most Pakistanis grow up in Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto, Balochi or one of dozens of mountain languages, and meet Urdu at school and on television. Knowing the map of tongues is knowing why your family's Urdu carries the accent it does.

Good to know
✨ Punjabi, the most spoken mother tongue in Pakistan — the language of Punjab, of Heer Ranjha, and of half the diaspora's grandparents. Its 'kiddāṉ?' is the friendliest hello in South Asia.
✨ Sindhi: the language of Sindh and one of the subcontinent's oldest literary tongues, written in its own extended Arabic script with 52 letters — more than Urdu's 39.
✨ Pashto: the language of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Pathans, with a poetic tradition built on the two-line landay and the great 17th-century poet Rahman Baba.
✨ Balochi: the language of Pakistan's largest province by land, kept alive for centuries by oral poets across some of the world's emptiest terrain.
✨ Northern Pakistan is one of the densest language regions on earth: Shina and Balti in Gilgit-Baltistan, Khowar in Chitral, Burushaski in Hunza — a language with no known relative anywhere in the world.
✨ Balti is a Tibetan language written today in Perso-Arabic script — and it gave English the word polo, which you met in Desi Roots.
