The flavor system — lena, dena, jana change a verb's direction
Urdu verbs travel in pairs: khā liyā (ate — for yourself), khol diyā (opened — for someone else), so gayā (fell asleep — fully). The second verb adds flavor: lenā points inward, denā points outward, jānā means all the way. This is what makes speech sound native.
میں نے کھانا کھا لیاmaiṉ ne khānā khā liyā — I've eaten (all done)Khā liyā = ate, benefit landing on yourself. The answer to every ammi's call.
دروازہ کھول دیںdarwāza khol deṉ — Please open the doorKhol deṉ = open (for someone else) — denā pointing outward. Darwāza = door.
مجھے بتا دیںmujhe batā deṉ — Let me knowBatānā = to tell + denā. The universal 'keep me posted'.
لکھ لیںlikh leṉ — Write it downLikhnā + lenā — noting it for your own use. Teachers say this constantly.
بیٹھ جائیںbaiṭh jāeṉ — Please sit downJānā as finisher = complete the action. L19's baiṭhnā, completed.
سو جاؤso jāo — Go to sleepSo jāo — what every parent says. Sonā = to sleep, jānā = all the way.
ہم یہ کام کر لیں گےhum yeh kām kar leṉ ge — We'll get this doneKām = work/task. Kar lenā = handle it ourselves — quiet confidence.
میں بھول گیاmaiṉ bhūl gayā — I forgotBhūlnā + jānā = forgot completely. Women say bhūl gaī. Honest and useful.
Good to know
✨ The rule of thumb: lenā = the action's benefit comes toward the doer (likh lo — write it for yourself); denā = it flows outward to someone else (likh do — write it for them).
✨ Native speakers pick these automatically and can't always explain why — compound verbs are the deepest 'feel' layer of Urdu. Getting even a few right makes you sound years ahead.
✨ So jāo, ā jāo, baiṭh jāo — jānā as the second verb means the action completes fully. It's the difference between 'sit' and 'settle in'.
